Guphwasconsiderablyshakenwhenhefelluponthehardground,butheappearedtotakenonoticeoftheimpertinenceandcomposedhimselftospeakagaintotheGrandGallipoot.
"Mymaster,KingRoquattheRed,hassentmeheretoconferwithyou.HewishesyourassistancetoconquertheLandofOz."
HeretheGeneralpaused,andtheGrandGallipootscowleduponhimmoreterriblythaneverandsaid:
"Goon!"
ThevoiceoftheGrandGallipootwaspartlyaroarandpartlyagrowl.HemumbledhiswordsbadlyandGuphhadtolistencarefullyinordertounderstandhim.
TheseGrowleywogswerecertainlyremarkablecreatures.Theywereofgiganticsize,yetwereallboneandskinandmuscle,therebeingnomeatorfatupontheirbodiesatall.Theirpowerfulmuscleslayjustunderneaththeirskins,likebunchesoftoughrope,andtheweakestGrowleywogwassostrongthathecouldpickupanelephantandtossitsevenmilesaway.
Itseemsunfortunatethatstrongpeopleareusuallysodisagreeableandoverbearingthatnoonecaresforthem.Infact,tobedifferentfromyourfellowcreaturesisalwaysamisfortune.TheGrowleywogsknewthattheyweredislikedandavoidedbyeveryone,sotheyhadbecomesurlyandunsociableevenamongthemselves.Guphknewthattheyhatedallpeople,includingtheNomes;buthehopedtowinthemover,nevertheless,andknewthatifhesucceededtheywouldaffordhimverypowerfulassistance.
"TheLandofOzisruledbyanamby-pambygirlwhoisdisgustinglykindandgood,"hecontinued."Herpeopleareallhappyandcontentedandhavenocareorworrieswhatever.
