"ThenI’llgoalong,"decidedBillina,andscarcelyhadshespokenwhenTotoranupandjoinedthem.
TotoandtheYellowHenhadbecomequitefriendlybythistime,althoughatfirsttheydidnotgetalongwelltogether.Billinahadbeenrathersuspiciousofdogs,andTotohadhadanideathatitwaseverydog’sdutytochaseahenonsight.ButDorothyhadtalkedtothemandscoldedthemfornotbeingagreeabletooneanotheruntiltheygrewbetteracquaintedandbecamefriends.
Iwon’tsaytheylovedeachotherdearly,butatleasttheyhadstoppedquarrelingandnowmanagedtogetontogetherverywell.
Thedaywasgrowinglightereveryminuteanddrivingtheblackshadowsoutoftheforest;soDorothyfounditverypleasantwalkingunderthetrees.Shewentsomedistanceinonedirection,butnotfindingapath,presentlyturnedinadifferentdirection.Therewasnopathhere,either,althoughsheadvancedquiteawayintotheforest,windinghereandthereamongthetreesandpeeringthroughthebushesinanendeavortofindsomebeatentrack.
"Ithinkwe’dbettergoback,"suggestedtheYellowHen,afteratime."Thepeoplewillallbeupbythistimeandbreakfastwillbeready."

Shehadprobablymadeamistakeaboutthat,foraftertheyhadgonefarenoughtohavereachedthecamptheystillfoundthemselvesinthethickofthewoods.
