           Beatricenowstrayedcarelesslythroughthegarden,approachingcloserbeneathGiovanni’swindow,sothathewascompelledtothrusthisheadquiteoutofitsconcealmentinordertogratifytheintenseandpainfulcuriositywhichsheexcited.Atthismomenttherecameabeautifulinsectoverthegardenwall;ithad,perhaps,wanderedthroughthecity,andfoundnoflowersorverdureamongthoseantiquehauntsofmenuntiltheheavyperfumesofDr.Rappaccini’sshrubshadlureditfromafar.Withoutalightingontheflowers,thiswingedbrightnessseemedtobeattractedbyBeatrice,andlingeredintheairandflutteredaboutherhead.Now,hereitcouldnotbebutthatGiovanniGuasconti’seyesdeceivedhim.Bethatasitmight,hefanciedthat,whileBeatricewasgazingattheinsectwithchildishdelight,itgrewfaintandfellatherfeet;itsbrightwingsshivered;itwasdead—fromnocausethathecoulddiscern,unlessitweretheatmosphereofherbreath.AgainBeatricecrossedherselfandsighedheavilyasshebentoverthedeadinsect.

           AnimpulsivemovementofGiovannidrewhereyestothewindow.Thereshebeheldthebeautifulheadoftheyoungman—ratheraGrecianthananItalianhead,withfair,regularfeatures,andaglisteningofgoldamonghisringlets—gazingdownuponherlikeabeingthathoveredinmidair.
