           Withoutmorewords,hethrewhiscompanionthemaplestick,andwasasspeedilyoutofsightasifhehadvanishedintothedeepeninggloom.Theyoungmansatafewmomentsbytheroadside,applaudinghimselfgreatly,andthinkingwithhowclearaconscienceheshouldmeettheministerinhismorningwalk,norshrinkfromtheeyeofgoodoldDeaconGookin.Andwhatcalmsleepwouldbehisthatverynight,whichwastohavebeenspentsowickedly,butsopurelyandsweetlynow,inthearmsofFaith!Amidstthesepleasantandpraiseworthymeditations,GoodmanBrownheardthetrampofhorsesalongtheroad,anddeemeditadvisabletoconcealhimselfwithinthevergeoftheforest,consciousoftheguiltypurposethathadbroughthimthither,thoughnowsohappilyturnedfromit.

           Oncamethehooftrampsandthevoicesoftheriders,twograveoldvoices,conversingsoberlyastheydrewnear.Thesemingledsoundsappearedtopassalongtheroad,withinafewyardsoftheyoungman’shiding-place;but,owingdoubtlesstothedepthofthegloomatthatparticularspot,neitherthetravellersnortheirsteedswerevisible.
