Andthen,astheby-standersafterwardsaffirmed,ahissingsoundwasheard,apparentlyinRoderickElliston’sbreast.Itwassaid,too,thatanansweringhisscamefromthevitalsoftheshipmaster,asifasnakewereactuallylurkingthereandhadbeenarousedbythecallofitsbrotherreptile.Iftherewereinfactanysuchsound,itmighthavebeencausedbyamaliciousexerciseofventriloquismonthepartofRoderick.
Thusmakinghisownactualserpent—ifaserpentthereactuallywasinhisbosom—thetypeofeachman’sfatalerror,orhoardedsin,orunquietconscience,andstrikinghisstingsounremorsefullyintothesorestspot,wemaywellimaginethatRoderickbecamethepestofthecity.Nobodycouldeludehim—nonecouldwithstandhim.Hegrappledwiththeugliesttruththathecouldlayhishandon,andcompelledhisadversarytodothesame.
