But,letgoodmenpushandelbowoneanotherastheymayduringtheirearthlymarch,allwillbepeaceamongthemwhenthehonorablearrayortheirprocessionshalltreadonheavenlyground.Theretheywilldoubtlessfindthattheyhavebeenworkingeachfortheother’scause,andthateverywell-deliveredstroke,which,withanhonestpurposeanymortalstruck,evenforanarrowobject,wasindeedstrickenfortheuniversalcauseofgood.Theirownviewmaybeboundedbycountry,creed,profession,thediversitiesofindividualcharacter—butabovethemallisthebreadthofProvidence.Howmanywhohavedeemedthemselvesantagonistswillsmilehereafter,whentheylookbackupontheworld’swideharvestfield,andperceivethat,inunconsciousbrotherhood,theywerehelpingtobindtheselfsamesheaf!
But,come!Thesunishasteningwestward,whilethemarchofhumanlife,thatneverpausedbefore,isdelayedbyourattempttorearrangeitsorder.Itisdesirabletofindsomecomprehensiveprinciple,thatshallrenderourtaskeasierbybringingthousandsintotherankswherehithertowehavebroughtone.Thereforeletthetrumpet,ifpossible,splititsbrazenthroatwithaloudernotethanever,andtheheraldsummonallmortals,who,fromwhatevercause,havelost,orneverfound,theirproperplacesinthewold.
Obedienttothiscall,agreatmultitudecometogether,mostofthemwithalistlessgait,betokeningwearinessofsoul,yetwithagleamofsatisfactionintheirfaces,ataprospectofatlengthreachingthosepositionswhich,hitherto,theyhavevainlysought.
