Thefirstthatpresentshimselfisamanofwealth,whohasbequeathedthebulkofhispropertytoahospital;hisghost,methinks,wouldhaveabetterrightherethanhislivingbody.Butheretheycome,thegenuinebenefactorsoftheirrace.Somehavewanderedabouttheearthwithpicturesofblissintheirimagination,andwithheartsthatshranksensitivelyfromtheideaofpainandwoe,yethavestudiedallvarietiesofmiserythathumannaturecanendure.Theprison,theinsaneasylum,thesqualidchamberofthealmshouse,themanufactorywherethedemonofmachineryannihilatesthehumansoul,andthecottonfieldwhereGod’simagebecomesabeastofburden;totheseandeveryotherscenewheremanwrongsorneglectshisbrother,theapostlesofhumanityhavepenetrated.Thismissionary,blackwithIndia’sburningsunshine,shallgivehisarmtoapale-facedbrotherwhohasmadehimselffamiliarwiththeinfectedalleysandloathsomehauntsofviceinoneofourowncities.Thegenerousfounderofacollegeshallbethepartnerofamaidenladyofnarrowsubstance,oneofwhosegooddeedsithasbeentogatheralittleschooloforphanchildren.Ifthemightymerchantwhosebenefactionsarereckonedbythousandsofdollarsdeemhimselfworthy,lethimjointheprocessionwithherwhoselovehasproveditselfbywatchingsatthesick-bed,andallthoselowlyofficeswhichbringherintoactualcontactwithdiseaseandwretchedness.
