Andnext,letthetrumpetpourforthafunerealwail,andtheherald’svoicegivebreathinonevastcrytoallthegroansandgrievousutterancesthatareaudiblethroughouttheearth.Weappealnowtothesacredbondofsorrow,andsummonthegreatmultitudewholaborundersimilarafflictionstotaketheirplacesinthemarch.
Howmanyaheartthatwouldhavebeeninsensibletoanyothercallhasrespondedtothedolefulaccentsofthatvoice!Ithasgonefarandwide,andhighandlow,andleftscarcelyamortalroofunvisited.Indeed,theprincipleisonlytoouniversalforourpurpose,and,unlesswelimitit,willquitebreakupourclassificationofmankind,andconvertthewholeprocessionintoafuneraltrain.Wewillthereforebeatsomepainstodiscriminate.Herecomesalonelyrichman:hehasbuiltanoblefabricforhisdwelling-house,withafrontofstatelyarchitectureandmarblefloorsanddoorsofpreciouswoods;thewholestructureisasbeautifulasadreamandassubstantialasthenativerock.
