           Thereoncelivedamanandhiswife,whohadlongwishedforachild,butinvain. Nowtherewasatthebackoftheirhousealittlewindowwhichoverlookedabeautifulgardenfullofthefinestvegetablesandflowers; buttherewasahighwallallroundit,andnooneventuredintoit,foritbelongedtoawitchofgreatmight,andofwhomalltheworldwasafraid. 

           Onedaythatthewifewasstandingatthewindow,andlookingintothegarden,shesawabedfilledwiththefinestrampion; anditlookedsofreshandgreenthatshebegantowishforsome;andatlengthshelongedforitgreatly. Thiswentonfordays,andassheknewshecouldnotgettherampion,shepinedaway,andgrewpaleandmiserable. Thenthemanwasuneasy,andasked, "Whatisthematter,dearwife?" 

           "Oh,"answeredshe,"IshalldieunlessIcanhavesomeofthatrampiontoeatthatgrowsinthegardenatthebackofourhouse." Theman,wholovedherverymuch,thoughttohimself, "RatherthanlosemywifeIwillgetsomerampion,costwhatitwill. "Sointhetwilightheclimbedoverthewallintothewitch’sgarden,pluckedhastilyahandfuloframpionandbroughtittohiswife. Shemadeasaladofitatonce,andateofittoherheart’scontent. Butshelikeditsomuch,andittastedsogood,thatthenextdayshelongedforitthriceasmuchasshehaddonebefore; ifshewastohaveanyrestthemanmustclimboverthewalloncemore.
