Theywalkeduptothisdoorandlookedin.Seatedonabenchwasamanclothedinaspottedshirt,aredvest,andfadedbluetrousers,whosebodywasmerelysticksofwood,jointedclumsilytogether.Onhisneckwassetaround,yellowpumpkin,withafacecarvedonitsuchasaboyoftencarvesonajack-lantern.
Thisqueermanwasengagedinsnappingslipperypumpkin-seedswithhiswoodenfingers,tryingtohitatargetontheothersideoftheroomwiththem.HedidnotknowhehadvisitorsuntilDorothyexclaimed:
"Why,it’sJackPumpkinheadhimself!"
Heturnedandsawthem,andatoncecameforwardtogreetthelittleKansasgirlandNickChopper,andtobeintroducedtotheirnewfriends.
