Heheardher,andtriedtopulldownthesail;butthewindwouldnotletgoofthebroadcanvasandtheropeshadbecometangled.
Nearerandnearertheydrewtothegreatrocks,andtheshaggymanwasindespairbecausehecoulddonothingtostopthewildrushofthesand-boat.
Theyreachedtheedgeofthedesertandbumpedsquarelyintotherocks.TherewasacrashasDorothy,Button-Bright,TotoandPollyflewupintheairinacurvelikeaskyrocket’s,oneafteranotherlandinghighuponthegrass,wheretheyrolledandtumbledforatimebeforetheycouldstopthemselves.
Theshaggymanflewafterthem,headfirst,andlightedinaheapbesideToto,who,beingmuchexcitedatthetime,seizedoneofthedonkeyearsbetweenhisteethandshookandworrieditashardashecould,growlingangrily.Theshaggymanmadethelittledogletgo,andsatuptolookaroundhim.
