Finally,theshaggymansaid:
"It’snearlyevening,now;sowemayaswellsleepinthisprettyplaceandgetrested;perhapsbymorningwecandecidewhatisbesttobedone."
Therewaslittlechancetomakebedsforthechildren,buttheleavesofthetreesgrewthicklyandwouldservetokeepoffthenightdews,sotheshaggymanpiledsoftgrassesinthethickestshadeandwhenitwasdarktheylaydownandsleptpeacefullyuntilmorning.
Longaftertheotherswereasleep,however,theshaggymansatinthestarlightbythespring,gazingthoughtfullyintoitsbubblingwaters.Suddenlyhesmiledandnoddedtohimselfasifhehadfoundagoodthought,afterwhichhe,too,laidhimselfdownunderatreeandwassoonlostinslumber.
Inthebrightmorningsunshine,astheyateofthestrawberriesandsweetjuicypears,Dorothysaid:
"Polly,canyoudoanymagic?"
"Nodear,"answeredPolychrome,shakingherdaintyhead.
"YououghttoknowSOMEmagic,beingtheRainbow’sDaughter,"continuedDorothy,earnestly.
"Butwewholiveontherainbowamongthefleecycloudshavenouseformagic,"repliedPolychrome.
"WhatI’dlike,"saidDorothy,"istofindsomewaytocrossthedeserttotheLandofOzanditsEmeraldCity.I’vecrosseditalready,youknow,morethanonce.Firstacyclonecarriedmyhouseover,andsomeSilverShoesbroughtmebackagain—inhalfasecond.ThenOzmatookmeoveronherMagicCarpet,andtheNomeKing’sMagicBelttookmehomethattime.
