By-and-bytheycametoabigsquare,andinthecenterofthesquarestoodtheroyalpalace.Dorothyknewitatoncebecauseithadoveritsgreatdoorthecarvedheadofafoxjustliketheoneshehadseenonthearch,andthisfoxwastheonlyonewhoworeagoldencrown.
Thereweremanyfox-soldiersguardingthedoor,buttheybowedtothecaptainandadmittedhimwithoutquestion.Thecaptainledthemthroughmanyrooms,whererichlydressedfoxesweresittingonbeautifulchairsorsippingtea,whichwasbeingpassedaroundbyfox-servantsinwhiteaprons.Theycametoabigdoorwaycoveredwithheavycurtainsofclothofgold.
Besidethisdoorwaystoodahugedrum.Thefox-captainwenttothisdrumandknockedhiskneesagainstit—firstonekneeandthentheother—sothatthedrumsaid:"Boom-boom."
"YoumustalldoexactlywhatIdo,"orderedthecaptain;sotheshaggymanpoundedthedrumwithhisknees,andsodidDorothyandsodidButton-Bright.Theboywantedtokeeponpoundingitwithhislittlefatknees,becausehelikedthesoundofit;butthecaptainstoppedhim.Totocouldn’tpoundthedrumwithhiskneesandhedidn’tknowenoughtowaghistailagainstit,soDorothypoundedthedrumforhimandthatmadehimbark,andwhenthelittledogbarkedthefox-captainscowled.
Thegoldencurtainsdrewbackfarenoughtomakeanopening,throughwhichmarchedthecaptainwiththeothers.
