           Herblueeyesstaredabit,beingofglass,yettheexpressionuponherMajesty’sfacewasquitepleasantanddecidedlywinning.WiththeQueenofMerrylandwerefourwoodensoldiers,twostalkingaheadofherwithmuchdignityandtwofollowingbehind,likearoyalbodyguard.Thesoldierswerepaintedinbrightcolorsandcarriedwoodenguns,andafterthemcameafatlittlemanwhoattractedattentionatonce,althoughheseemedmodestandretiring.Forhewasmadeofcandy,andcarriedatinsugar-sifterfilledwithpowderedsugar,withwhichhedustedhimselffrequentlysothathewouldn’tsticktothingsifhetouchedthem.TheHighChamberlainhadcalledhim"TheCandyManofMerryland,"andDorothysawthatoneofhisthumbslookedasifithadbeenbittenoffbysomeonewhowasfondofcandyandcouldn’tresistthetemptation.

           ThewaxdollQueenspokeprettilytoDorothyandtheothers,andsentherlovinggreetingstoOzmabeforesheretiredtotheroomspreparedforher.Shehadbroughtabirthdaypresentwrappedintissuepaperandtiedwithpinkandblueribbons,andoneofthewoodensoldiersplaceditonthetablewiththeothergifts.ButtheCandyMandidnotgotohisroom,becausehesaidhepreferredtostayandtalkwiththeScarecrowandTik-tokandtheWizardandTinWoodman,whomhedeclaredthequeerestpeoplehehadevermet.Button-BrightwasgladtheCandyManstayedintheThroneRoom,becausetheboythoughtthisguestsmelleddeliciouslyofwintergreenandmaplesugar.
