           Hehadbeengivenoneofthehandsomestapartmentsinthemostmagnificentpalaceintheworld,andyoucannotwonderthathisgoodfortuneastonishedandawedhimuntilhegrewusedtohissurroundings.

           Thefurniturewasupholsteredinclothofgold,withtheroyalcrownembroidereduponitinscarlet.Theruguponthemarblefloorwassothickandsoftthathecouldnothearthesoundofhisownfootsteps,anduponthewallsweresplendidtapestrieswovenwithscenesfromtheLandofOz.Booksandornamentswerescatteredaboutinprofusion,andtheshaggymanthoughthehadneverseensomanyprettythingsinoneplacebefore.Inonecornerplayedatinklingfountainofperfumedwater,andinanotherwasatablebearingagoldentrayloadedwithfreshlygatheredfruit,includingseveralofthered-cheekedapplesthattheshaggymanloved.

           Atthefartherendofthischarmingroomwasanopendoorway,andhecrossedovertofindhimselfinabedroomcontainingmorecomfortsthantheshaggymanhadeverbeforeimagined.Thebedsteadwasofgoldandsetwithmanybrilliantdiamonds,andthecoverlethaddesignsofpearlsandrubiesseweduponit.Atonesideofthebedroomwasadaintydressing-roomwithclosetscontainingalargeassortmentoffreshclothing;andbeyondthiswasthebath—alargeroomhavingamarblepoolbigenoughtoswimin,withwhitemarblestepsleadingdowntothewater.Aroundtheedgeofthepoolweresetrowsoffineemeraldsaslargeasdoor-knobs,whilethewaterofthebathwasclearascrystal.
