ThefarmpeopleknewDorothy,havingseenherwhenshewasinthecountrybefore,andtheytreatedthelittlegirlwithasmuchrespectastheydidtheEmperor,becauseshewasafriendofthepowerfulPrincessOzma.
Theyhadnotproceededfarafterleavingthisfarm-housebeforecomingtoahighbridgeoverabroadriver.Thisriver,theTinWoodmaninformedthem,wastheboundarybetweentheCountryoftheWinkiesandtheterritoryoftheEmeraldCity.Thecityitselfwasstillalongwayoff,butallarounditwasagreenmeadowasprettyasawell-keptlawn,andinthiswereneitherhousesnorfarmstospoilthebeautyofthescene.
Fromthetopofthehighbridgetheycouldseefarawaythemagnificentspiresandsplendiddomesofthesuperbcity,sparklinglikebrilliantjewelsastheytoweredabovetheemeraldwalls.Theshaggymandrewadeepbreathofaweandamazement,forneverhadhedreamedthatsuchagrandandbeautifulplacecouldexist—eveninthefairylandofOz.
Pollywassopleasedthathervioleteyessparkledlikeamethysts,andshedancedawayfromhercompanionsacrossthebridgeandintoagroupoffeatherytreesliningboththeroadsides.Thesetreesshestoppedtolookatwithpleasureandsurprise,fortheirleaveswereshapedlikeostrichplumes,theirfeatheredgesbeautifullycurled;andalltheplumesweretintedinthesamedaintyrainbowhuesthatappearedinPolychrome’sownprettygauzegown.
"Fatheroughttoseethesetrees,"shemurmured;"theyarealmostaslovelyashisownrainbows.
