           If,aweekbefore,anyonehadtoldtheEarlofDorincourtthatonthatparticularmorninghewouldbeforgettinghisgoutandhisbadtemperinachild’sgame,playedwithblackandwhitewoodenpegs,onagaylypaintedboard,withacurly-headedsmallboyforacompanion,hewouldwithoutdoubthavemadehimselfveryunpleasant;andyethecertainlyhadforgottenhimselfwhenthedooropenedandThomasannouncedavisitor.
