           Astrangerlookingonmightwellhavesmiledatthepicture,—thegreatstatelyroom,thebigliveriedservants,thebrightlights,theglitteringsilverandglass,thefierce-lookingoldnoblemanattheheadofthetableandtheverysmallboyatthefoot.DinnerwasusuallyaveryseriousmatterwiththeEarl—anditwasaveryseriousmatterwiththecook,ifhislordshipwasnotpleasedorhadanindifferentappetite.To-day,however,hisappetiteseemedatriflebetterthanusual,perhapsbecausehehadsomethingtothinkofbesidetheflavoroftheentreesandthemanagementofthegravies.Hisgrandsongavehimsomethingtothinkof.Hekeptlookingathimacrossthetable.Hedidnotsayverymuchhimself,buthemanagedtomaketheboytalk.Hehadneverimaginedthathecouldbeentertainedbyhearingachildtalk,butLordFauntleroyatoncepuzzledandamusedhim,andhekeptrememberinghowhehadletthechildishshoulderfeelhisweightjustforthesakeoftryinghowfartheboy’scourageandendurancewouldgo,anditpleasedhimtoknowthathisgrandsonhadnotquailedandhadnotseemedtothinkevenforamomentofgivingupwhathehadundertakentodo.
