           Buttheydidnotknowwhatsortofalittlelordhadcomeamongthem;theydidnotquiteunderstandthecharacterofthenextEarlofDorincourt.

           Hepulledoffhisovercoatquiteasifhewereusedtodoingthingsforhimself,andbegantolookabouthim.Helookedaboutthebroadhall,atthepicturesandstags’antlersandcuriousthingsthatornamentedit.Theyseemedcurioustohimbecausehehadneverseensuchthingsbeforeinaprivatehouse.

           ItwasquitealargehousecomparedtotheoneintheshabbyNewYorkstreet,anditwasveryprettyandcheerful.Maryledthemupstairstoabrightchintz-hungbedroomwhereafirewasburning,andalargesnow-whitePersiancatwassleepingluxuriouslyonthewhitefurhearth-rug.

           “Itwasthehouse-kaperupattheCastle,ma’am,sinthertoyez,”explainedMary.
