           “CaptainErrolwasveryfondofDorincourt,”shesaidatlast.“HelovedEngland,andeverythingEnglish.Itwasalwaysagrieftohimthathewaspartedfromhishome.Hewasproudofhishome,andofhisname.Hewouldwish—Iknowhewouldwishthathissonshouldknowthebeautifuloldplaces,andbebroughtupinsuchawayaswouldbesuitabletohisfutureposition.”

           ThenshecamebacktothetableandstoodlookingupatMr.Havishamverygently.

           “Myhusbandwouldwishit,”shesaid.“Itwillbebestformylittleboy.Iknow—IamsuretheEarlwouldnotbesounkindastotrytoteachhimnottoloveme;andIknow—evenifhetried—thatmylittleboyistoomuchlikehisfathertobeharmed.Hehasawarm,faithfulnature,andatrueheart.Hewouldlovemeevenifhedidnotseeme;andsolongaswemayseeeachother,Ioughtnottosufferverymuch.”

           “Shethinksverylittleofherself,”thelawyerthought.“Shedoesnotmakeanytermsforherself.”

           “Madam,”hesaidaloud,“Irespectyourconsiderationforyourson.Hewillthankyouforitwhenheisaman.IassureyouLordFauntleroywillbemostcarefullyguarded,andeveryeffortwillbeusedtoinsurehishappiness.TheEarlofDorincourtwillbeasanxiousforhiscomfortandwell-beingasyouyourselfcouldbe.”

           “Ihope,”saidthetenderlittlemother,inaratherbrokenvoice,“thathisgrandfatherwillloveCeddie.Thelittleboyhasaveryaffectionatenature;andhehasalwaysbeenloved.”

           Mr.Havishamclearedhisthroatagain.
