           Thecarriagerolledondownthestatelyavenueunderthebeautiful,broad-branchedtrees,throughthespacesofgreenshadeandlanesofgoldensunlight.Fauntleroysawagainthelovelyplaceswherethefernsgrewhighandthebluebellsswayedinthebreeze;hesawthedeer,standingorlyinginthedeepgrass,turntheirlarge,startledeyesasthecarriagepassed,andcaughtglimpsesofthebrownrabbitsastheyscurriedaway.Heheardthewhirofthepartridgesandthecallsandsongsofthebirds,anditallseemedevenmorebeautifultohimthanbefore.Allhisheartwasfilledwithpleasureandhappinessinthebeautythatwasoneveryside.ButtheoldEarlsawandheardverydifferentthings,thoughhewasapparentlylookingouttoo.Hesawalonglife,inwhichtherehadbeenneithergenerousdeedsnorkindthoughts;hesawyearsinwhichamanwhohadbeenyoungandstrongandrichandpowerfulhadusedhisyouthandstrengthandwealthandpoweronlytopleasehimselfandkilltimeasthedaysandyearssucceededeachother;hesawthisman,whenthetimehadbeenkilledandoldagehadcome,solitaryandwithoutrealfriendsinthemidstofallhissplendidwealth;hesawpeoplewhodislikedorfearedhim,andpeoplewhowouldflatterandcringetohim,butnoonewhoreallycaredwhetherhelivedordied,unlesstheyhadsomethingtogainorlosebyit.Helookedoutonthebroadacreswhichbelongedtohim,andheknewwhatFauntleroydidnot—howfartheyextended,whatwealththeyrepresented,andhowmanypeoplehadhomesontheirsoil.
