11. They Meet the Wooden Gargoyles
TheWizardraisedoneofhisrevolversandfiredintothethrongofhisenemies,andtheshotresoundedlikeaclapofthunderinthatsilentplace.
Someofthewoodenbeingsfellflatupontheground,wheretheyquiveredandtrembledineverylimb;butmostofthemmanagedtowheelandescapeagaintoadistance.
ZebranandpickeduponeoftheGargoylesthatlaynearesttohim.ThetopofitsheadwascarvedintoacrownandtheWizard’sbullethadstruckitexactlyinthelefteye,whichwasahardwoodenknot.Halfofthebulletstuckinthewoodandhalfstuckout,soithadbeenthejarandthesuddennoisethathadknockedthecreaturedown,morethanthefactthatitwasreallyhurt.BeforethiscrownedGargoylehadrecoveredhimselfZebhadwoundastrapseveraltimesarounditsbody,confiningitswingsandarmssothatitcouldnotmove.Then,havingtiedthewoodencreaturesecurely,theboybuckledthestrapandtossedhisprisonerintothebuggy.Bythattimetheothershadallretired.
