           Thesewereverynumerous,fortheplacewasthicklyinhabited,andalargegroupofthequeerpeopleclusterednear,gazingsharplyuponthestrangerswhohademergedfromthelongspiralstairway.

           TheGargoyleswereverysmallofstature,beinglessthanthreefeetinheight.Theirbodieswereround,theirlegsshortandthickandtheirarmsextraordinarilylongandstout.Theirheadsweretoobigfortheirbodiesandtheirfacesweredecidedlyuglytolookupon.Somehadlong,curvednosesandchins,smalleyesandwide,grinningmouths.Othershadflatnoses,protrudingeyes,andearsthatwereshapedlikethoseofanelephant.Thereweremanytypes,indeed,scarcelytwobeingalike;butallwereequallydisagreeableinappearance.
