TheresheenteredinatDorothy’swindowinthedomeandarousedherfromhersleep.
AssoonasthelittlegirlknewwhathadhappenedsheawakenedtheWizardandZeb,andatoncepreparationsweremadetogototherescueofJimandthepiglets.TheWizardcarriedhissatchel,whichwasquiteheavy,andZebcarriedthetwolanternsandtheoilcan.Dorothy’swickersuit-casewasstillundertheseatofthebuggy,andbygoodfortunetheboyhadalsoplacedtheharnessinthebuggywhenhehadtakenitofffromJimtoletthehorseliedownandrest.Sotherewasnothingforthegirltocarrybutthekitten,whichsheheldclosetoherbosomandtriedtocomfort,foritslittleheartwasstillbeatingrapidly.
SomeoftheMangaboosdiscoveredthemassoonastheylefttheHouseoftheSorcerer;butwhentheystartedtowardthemountainthevegetablepeopleallowedthemtoproceedwithoutinterference,yetfollowedinacrowdbehindthemsothattheycouldnotgobackagain.
BeforelongtheynearedtheBlackPit,whereabusyswarmofMangaboos,headedbytheirPrincess,wasengagedinpilingupglassrocksbeforetheentrance.
"Stop,Icommandyou!"criedtheWizard,inanangrytone,andatoncebeganpullingdowntherockstoliberateJimandthepiglets.Insteadofopposinghiminthistheystoodbackinsilenceuntilhehadmadeagood-sizedholeinthebarrier,whenbyorderofthePrincesstheyallsprangforwardandthrustouttheirsharpthorns.
Dorothyhoppedinsidetheopeningtoescapebeingpricked,andZebandtheWizard,afterenduringafewstabsfromthethorns,weregladtofollowher.
