WhentheTinWoodmansatdownnooneapplaudedhim,forhisargumentshadnotbeenveryconvincingandfewbelievedthathehadprovedEureka’sinnocence.AsfortheJury,thememberswhisperedtoeachotherforafewminutesandthentheyappointedtheHungryTigertheirspokesman.Thehugebeastslowlyaroseandsaid:
"Kittenshavenoconsciences,sotheyeatwhateverpleasesthem.ThejurybelievesthewhitekittenknownasEurekaisguiltyofhavingeatenthepigletownedbyPrincessOzma,andrecommendsthatshebeputtodeathinpunishmentofthecrime."
Thejudgmentofthejurywasreceivedwithgreatapplause,althoughDorothywassobbingmiserablyatthefateofherpet.ThePrincesswasjustabouttoorderEureka’sheadchoppedoffwiththeTinWoodman’saxewhenthatbrilliantpersonageoncemorearoseandaddressedher.
"YourHighness,"saidhe,"seehoweasyitisforajurytobemistaken.
