DorothythankedherfriendandenteredtheRedWagonandtoldtheSawhorsetotakeherbackhometothepalaceintheEmeraldCity.
Onthewayshethoughtthematteroverseriouslyofmakingasurprisebirthdaycakeandfinallydecidedwhattodo.
Assoonasshereachedhome,shewenttotheWizardofOz,whohadaroomfittedupinoneofthehightowersofthepalace,wherehestudiedmagicsoastobeabletoperformsuchwizardryasOzmacommandedhimtodoforthewelfareofhersubjects.
TheWizardandDorothywerefirmfriendsandhadenjoyedmanystrangeadventurestogether.Hewasalittlemanwithabaldheadandsharpeyesandaround,jollyface,andbecausehewasneitherhaughtynorproudhehadbecomeagreatfavoritewiththeOzpeople.
