           Suchgeneralisationsbelonged,however,toanearlierstageofhisexperience.Themorehesawoflifethemoreincalculablehefoundit;andhehadlearnedtoyieldtohisimpressionswithoutfeelingtheyouthfulneedofrelatingthemtoothers.Itwasthegirlintheoppositeseatwhohadrousedinhimthedormanthabitofcomparison.Shewasdistinguishedfromthedaughtersofwealthbyheravowedacquaintancewiththerealbusinessofliving,afamiliarityasdifferentaspossiblefromtheirtheoreticalproficiency;yetitseemedtoDarrowthatherexperiencehadmadeherfreewithouthardnessandself-assuredwithoutassertiveness.

           TherushintoAmiens,andtheflashofthestationlightsintotheircompartment,brokeMissViner’ssleep,andwithoutchangingherpositionsheliftedherlidsandlookedatDarrow.Therewasneithersurprisenorbewildermentinthelook.Sheseemedinstantlyconscious,notsomuchofwhereshewas,asofthefactthatshewaswithhim;andthatfactseemedenoughtoreassureher.
