           Whenthebuggywasfinallyready,heputonhisrubbercoat,climbedin,andwithoutwaitingforthestablemantoraisethetop,droveoutintotherain,anew-litcigarinhisteeth.Ashepassedthedairy-house,hesawHilmastandinginthedoorway,holdingoutherhandtotherain,herfaceturnedupwardtowardthegreysky,amusedandinterestedatthisfirstshowerofthewetseason.ShewassoabsorbedthatshedidnotseeAnnixter,andhisclumsynodinherdirectionpassedunnoticed.

           “Shediditonpurpose,”Annixtertoldhimself,chewingfiercelyonhiscigar.“Cutsmenow,hey?Well,thisDOESsettleit.SheleavesthisranchbeforeI’madayolder.”

           Hedecidedthathewouldputoffhistourofinspectiontillthenextday.Travellinginthebuggyashedid,hemustkeeptotheroadwhichledtoDerrick’s,inveryroundaboutfashion,bywayofGuadalajara.
