           “Youmustn’ttalklikethat,Mrs.Dyke,”protestedPresley,“nonsense;youwilllivelongenoughtoseethelittletadmarried.”Hetriedtobecheerful.Butheknewhiswordslackedtheringofconviction.Deathalreadyovershadowedthefaceoftheengineer’smother.Hefeltthatshespokethetruth,andashestoodtherespeakingtoherforthelasttime,hisarmaboutlittleSidney’sshoulder,heknewthathewasseeingthebeginningsofthewreckofanotherfamilyandthat,likeHildaHooven,anotherbabygirlwastobestartedinlife,throughnofaultofhers,fearfullyhandicapped,weigheddownatthethresholdofexistencewithaloadofdisgrace.HildaHoovenandSidneyDyke,whatwastobetheirhistories?theone,sisterofanoutcast;theother,daughterofaconvict.
