           “Ifitwasalllikethat,sir,hey?”observedPhelps.

           “Breadwouldbeasgoodascake,then,”heanswered,goingfromsacktosack,inspectingthecontentsandconsultingthetagsaffixedtothemouths.

           “Hello,”heremarked,“here’saredwheat.Wheredidthiscomefrom?”

           “That’sthatredClawsonwesowedtothepieceonFour,norththeMissionCreek,justtoseehowitwoulddohere.Wedidn’tgetaverygoodcatch.”

           “Wecan’tdobetterthantostaybyWhiteSonoraandPropo,”remarkedHarran.“We’vegotourbestresultswiththat,andEuropeanmillerslikeittomixwiththeEasternwheatsthathavemoreglutenthanours.Thatis,ifwehaveanywheatatallnextyear.”

           Afeelingofdiscouragementforthemomentboredownheavilyuponhim.Atintervalsthiscametohimandforthemomentitwasoverpowering.Theideaof“what’s-the-use”wasuponoccasionaveritableoppression.Everythingseemedtocombinetolowerthepriceofwheat.Theextensionofwheatareasalwaysexceededincreaseofpopulation;competitionwasgrowingfiercereveryyear.Thefarmer’sprofitsweretheobjectofattackfromascoreofdifferentquarters.
