ItwasPresley’smorbidlykeenobservationthatfirstnoticedtheevidenceofanewtroubleintheGovernor’sfaceandmanner.PresleywassurethatLyman’sdefectionhadnotsoupsethim.Themorningafterthecommitteemeeting,MagnushadcalledHarranandAnnieDerrickintotheoffice,and,aftertellinghiswifeofLyman’sbetrayal,hadforbiddeneitherofthemtomentionhisnameagain.Hisattitudetowardshisprodigalsonwasthatofstern,unrelentingresentment.Butnow,Presleycouldnotfailtodetecttracesofamoredeep-seatedtravail.Somethingwasinthewind,thetimesweretroublous.Whatnextwasabouttohappen?Whatfreshcalamityimpended?
Onemorning,towardtheveryendoftheweek,Presleywokeearlyinhissmall,white-paintedironbed.Hehastenedtogetupanddress.Therewasmuchtobedonethatday.Untillatethenightbefore,hehadbeenatworkonacollectionofsomeofhisverses,gatheredfromthemagazinesinwhichtheyhadfirstappeared.Presleyhadreceivedaliberalofferforthepublicationoftheseversesinbookform.
