           “Yourstory,”suddenlyexclaimedMagnus,struckwithanidea,“willbethoroughlydiscreditedjustsosoonasthenewgraintariffispublished.IhavemeansofknowingthattheSanJoaquinrate—theissueuponwhichtheboardwaselected—isnottobetouched.Isitlikelytherancherswouldsecuretheelectionofaboardthatplaysthemfalse?”

           “Oh,weknowallaboutthat,”answeredGenslinger,smiling.“YouthoughtyouwereelectingLymaneasily.YouthoughtyouhadgottheRailroadtowalkrightintoyourtrap.Youdidn’tunderstandhowyoucouldpulloffyourdealsoeasily.Why,Governor,LYMANWASPLEDGEDTOTHERAILROADTWOYEARSAGO.HewasTHEONEPARTICULARmanthecorporationwantedforcommissioner.Andyourpeopleelectedhim—savedtheRailroadallthetroubleofcampaigningforhim.
