Theywerearranged,asitwere,enechelon,notinfile—notonedirectlybehindtheother,buteachsucceedingploughitsownwidthfartherinthefieldthantheoneinfrontofit.Eachoftheseploughsheldfiveshears,sothatwhentheentirecompanywasinmotion,onehundredandseventy-fivefurrowsweremadeatthesameinstant.Atadistance,theploughsresembledagreatcolumnoffieldartillery.Eachdriverwasinhisplace,hisglancealternatingbetweenhishorsesandtheforemannearestathand.Otherforemen,intheirbuggiesorbuckboards,wereatintervalsalongtheline,likebatterylieutenants.Annixterhimself,onhorseback,inbootsandcampaignhat,acigarinhisteeth,overlookedthescene.
