           “Getofftheranch.Yougetofftheranch.Andtakingthatbuckskinagainstmyexpressorders.Iwon’thaveyourkindabouttheplace,notmuch.I’measy-goingenough,Lordknows,butIdon’tproposetobeimposedonALLthetime.Packoff,youunderstandanddoitlively.GototheforemanandtellhimItoldhimtopayyouoffandthenclearout.And,youhearme,”heconcluded,withamenacingoutthrustofhislowerjaw,“youhearme,ifIcatchyouhangingaroundtheranchhouseafterthis,orifIsomuchasseeyouonQuienSabe,I’llshowyouthewayoffofit,myfriend,atthetoeofmyboot.Now,then,getoutofthewayandletmepass.”

           Angrybeyondthepowerofretort,Delaneydrovethespursintothebuckskinandpassedthebuggyinasinglebound.Annixtergatheredupthereinsanddroveonmutteringtohimself,andoccasionallylookingbacktoobservethebuckskinflyingtowardtheranchhouseinaspatteringshowerofmud,Delaneyurgingheron,hisheadbentdownagainstthefallingrain.

           “Huh,”gruntedAnnixterwithgrimsatisfaction,acertainsenseofgoodhumouratlengthreturningtohim,“thatjustabouttakesthesaleratusoutofYOURdough,myfriend.”

           Alittlefartheron,AnnixtergotoutofthebuggyasecondtimetoopenanothergatethatlethimoutupontheUpperRoad,notfardistantfromGuadalajara.ItwastheroadthatconnectedthattownwithBonnevilleandthatranparallelwiththerailroadtracks.
