Hereceivedusinhisquietlygenialfashion,orderedfreshrashersandeggs,andjoinedusinaheartymeal. Whenitwasconcludedhesettledournewacquaintanceuponthesofa,placedapillowbeneathhishead,andlaidaglassofbrandyandwaterwithinhisreach.
"Itiseasytoseethatyourexperiencehasbeennocommonone,Mr.Hatherley,"saidhe. "Pray,liedownthereandmakeyourselfabsolutelyathome. Telluswhatyoucan,butstopwhenyouaretiredandkeepupyourstrengthwithalittlestimulant."

Holmessatinhisbigarmchairwiththeweary,heavy-liddedexpressionwhichveiledhiskeenandeagernature,whileIsatoppositetohim,andwelistenedinsilencetothestrangestorywhichourvisitordetailedtous.
