SherlockHolmesclosedhiseyesandplacedhiselbowsuponthearmsofhischair,withhisfinger-tipstogether. "Theidealreasoner,"heremarked,"would,whenhehadoncebeenshownasinglefactinallitsbearings,deducefromitnotonlyallthechainofeventswhichleduptoitbutalsoalltheresultswhichwouldfollowfromit. AsCuviercouldcorrectlydescribeawholeanimalbythecontemplationofasinglebone,sotheobserverwhohasthoroughlyunderstoodonelinkinaseriesofincidentsshouldbeabletoaccuratelystatealltheotherones,bothbeforeandafter. Wehavenotyetgraspedtheresultswhichthereasonalonecanattainto. Problemsmaybesolvedinthestudywhichhavebaffledallthosewhohavesoughtasolutionbytheaidoftheirsenses. Tocarrytheart,however,toitshighestpitch,itisnecessarythatthereasonershouldbeabletoutilizeallthefactswhichhavecometohisknowledge; andthisinitselfimplies,asyouwillreadilysee,apossessionofallknowledge,which,eveninthesedaysoffreeeducationandencyclopaedias,isasomewhatrareaccomplishment. Itisnotsoimpossible,however,thatamanshouldpossessallknowledgewhichislikelytobeusefultohiminhiswork,andthisIhaveendeavouredinmycasetodo.
