Theymadeotherobservationsaftertheyhademergedfromtheirroomsinpursuitofbreakfast—amealofwhichtheypartookinahugebarehall,whereahundredNegroes,inwhitejackets,wereshufflingaboutuponanuncarpetedfloor;wherethefliesweresuperabundant,andthetablesanddishescoveredoverwithastrange,voluminousintegumentofcoarsebluegauze;andwhereseverallittleboysandgirls,whohadrisenlate,wereseatedinfastidioussolitudeatthemorningrepast.Theseyoungpersonshadnotthemorningpaperbeforethem,buttheywereengagedinlanguidperusalofthebilloffare.Thislatterdocumentwasagreatpuzzletoourfriends,who,onreflectingthatitsbewilderingcategorieshadrelationtobreakfastalone,hadanuneasyprevisionofanencyclopedicdinnerlist.Theyfoundagreatdealofentertainmentatthehotel,anenormouswoodenstructure,fortheerectionofwhichitseemedtothemthatthevirginforestsoftheWestmusthavebeenterriblydeflowered.Itwasperforatedfromendtoendwithimmensebarecorridors,throughwhichastrongdraughtwasblowing—bearingalongwonderfulfiguresofladiesinwhitemorningdressesandcloudsofValencienneslace,whoseemedtofloatdownthelongvistaswithexpandedfurbelows,likeangelsspreadingtheirwings.Infrontwasagiganticveranda,uponwhichanarmymighthaveencamped—avastwoodenterrace,witharoofasloftyasthenaveofacathedral.
