           ThePersiannowlookedatChristine’squietprofileunderthelamp.Shewasreadingatinybook,withgiltedges,likeareligiousbook.ThereareeditionsofTHEIMITATIONthatlooklikethat.ThePersianstillhadinhisearsthenaturaltoneinwhichtheotherhadsaid,"topleasemywife."Verygently,hecalledheragain;butChristinewaswrappedupinherbookanddidnothearhim.

           Erikreturned,mixedthedarogaadraftandadvisedhimnottospeakto"hiswife"againnortoanyone,BECAUSEITMIGHTBEVERYDANGEROUSTOEVERYBODY’SHEALTH.

           Eventually,thePersianfellasleep,likeM.deChagny,anddidnotwakeuntilhewasinhisownroom,nursedbyhisfaithfulDarius,whotoldhimthat,onthenightbefore,hewasfoundproppedagainstthedoorofhisflat,wherehehadbeenbroughtbyastranger,whorangthebellbeforegoingaway.
