           NordidtheLimberlostcontainlastyear’sterrors.Hehadbeenwithherinherhourofdesolation,whenstrippedbareanddeserted,shehadstoodshivering,asifherselfafraid.Hehadmadeexcursionsintotheinterioruntilhewasfamiliarwitheverypathandroadthateverhadbeencut.Hehadsoundedthedepthsofherdeepestpools,andhadlearnedwhythetreesgrewsomagnificently.Hehadfoundthatplacesofswampandswalewerefewcomparedwithmilesofsolidtimber-land,concealedbysummer’sluxuriantundergrowth.

           Thesoundsthatatfirsthadstruckcoldfearintohissoulhenowknewhadleftonwingandsilentfootattheapproachofwinter.Asflockafterflockofthebirdsreturnedandherecognizedtheoldechoesreawakening,hefoundtohissurprisethathehadbeenlonelyforthemandwashailingtheirreturnwithgreatjoy.Allhisfearswereforgotten.
