           Frecklesstoodonthecurbwithdroopedeyes,forhefeltthatifheliftedthemthetumultoftenderadorationinthemwouldshowandfrightenher.

           “Oh,Ijustenjoyedthat,”shecried.“Thosehateful,stealingoldthings!Ihadabignotiontopinkoneofthem,butIthoughtmaybesomewayitwouldbebestforyouthatIshouldn’t.Theyneededit.Thatdidn’tscareme;andasfortheBirdWoman,she’saccustomedtofindingsnakes,tramps,crossdogs,sheep,cattle,andgoodnessknowswhat!Youcan’tfrightenherwhenshe’safterapicture.Didtheycomeback?”

           “No,”saidFreckles.
