           Theoldmanhadjustfinishedhislunch,andcertainlyhisemptydishboreevidencetothegoodappetitewithwhichhishousekeeperhadcreditedhim.Hewas,indeed,aweirdfigureasheturnedhiswhitemaneandhisglowingeyestowardsus.Theeternalcigarettesmoulderedinhismouth.Hehadbeendressedandwasseatedinanarmchairbythefire.

           “Well,Mr.Holmes,haveyousolvedthismysteryyet?”Heshovedthelargetinofcigaretteswhichstoodonatablebesidehimtowardsmycompanion.
