           Holmessatdownandlistened.

           “ItallseemstocentreroundthatbustofNapoleonwhichIboughtforthisveryroomaboutfourmonthsago.IpickeditupcheapfromHardingBrothers,twodoorsfromtheHighStreetStation.Agreatdealofmyjournalisticworkisdoneatnight,andIoftenwriteuntiltheearlymorning.Soitwasto-day.Iwassittinginmyden,whichisatthebackofthetopofthehouse,aboutthreeo’clock,whenIwasconvincedthatIheardsomesoundsdownstairs.Ilistened,buttheywerenotrepeated,andIconcludedthattheycamefromoutside.Thensuddenly,aboutfiveminuteslater,therecameamosthorribleyell—themostdreadfulsound,Mr.Holmes,thateverIheard.ItwillringinmyearsaslongasIlive.Isatfrozenwithhorrorforaminuteortwo.ThenIseizedthepokerandwentdownstairs.WhenIenteredthisroomIfoundthewindowwideopen,andIatonceobservedthatthebustwasgonefromthemantelpiece.
