TheHonourableRonaldAdairwasthesecondsonoftheEarlofMaynooth,atthattimegovernorofoneoftheAustraliancolonies.Adair’smotherhadreturnedfromAustraliatoundergotheoperationforcataract,andshe,hersonRonald,andherdaughterHildawerelivingtogetherat427,ParkLane.Theyouthmovedinthebestsociety—had,sofaraswasknown,noenemiesandnoparticularvices.HehadbeenengagedtoMissEdithWoodley,ofCarstairs,buttheengagementhadbeenbrokenoffbymutualconsentsomemonthsbefore,andtherewasnosignthatithadleftanyveryprofoundfeelingbehindit.
