Abouttwohundredyardsfromthetree,asmallbrookcrossedtheroad,andranintoamarshyandthickly-woodedglen,knownbythenameofWiley’sSwamp.Afewroughlogs,laidsidebyside,servedforabridgeoverthisstream.Onthatsideoftheroadwherethebrookenteredthewood,agroupofoaksandchestnuts,mattedthickwithwildgrape-vines,threwacavernousgloomoverit.Topassthisbridgewastheseveresttrial.ItwasatthisidenticalspotthattheunfortunateAndréwascaptured,andunderthecovertofthosechestnutsandvineswerethesturdyyeomenconcealedwhosurprisedhim.Thishaseversincebeenconsideredahauntedstream,andfearfularethefeelingsoftheschoolboywhohastopassitaloneafterdark.
Asheapproachedthestream,hisheartbegantothump;hesummonedup,however,allhisresolution,gavehishorsehalfascoreofkicksintheribs,andattemptedtodashbrisklyacrossthebridge;butinsteadofstartingforward,theperverseoldanimalmadealateralmovement,andranbroadsideagainstthefence.
