Butallthesewerenothingtothetalesofghostsandapparitionsthatsucceeded.Theneighborhoodisrichinlegendarytreasuresofthekind.Localtalesandsuperstitionsthrivebestinthesesheltered,long-settledretreats;butaretrampledunderfootbytheshiftingthrongthatformsthepopulationofmostofourcountryplaces.Besides,thereisnoencouragementforghostsinmostofourvillages,fortheyhavescarcelyhadtimetofinishtheirfirstnapandturnthemselvesintheirgraves,beforetheirsurvivingfriendshavetravelledawayfromtheneighborhood;sothatwhentheyturnoutatnighttowalktheirrounds,theyhavenoacquaintancelefttocallupon.Thisisperhapsthereasonwhywesoseldomhearofghostsexceptinourlong-establishedDutchcommunities.
Theimmediatecause,however,oftheprevalenceofsupernaturalstoriesintheseparts,wasdoubtlessowingtothevicinityofSleepyHollow.
