“AndIhope,madam,thatMr.Allenwillbeobligedtoliketheplace,fromfindingitofservicetohim.”
“Thankyou,sir.Ihavenodoubtthathewill.Aneighbourofours,Dr.Skinner,washereforhishealthlastwinter,andcameawayquitestout.”
“Thatcircumstancemustgivegreatencouragement.”
“Yes,sir—andDr.Skinnerandhisfamilywereherethreemonths;soItellMr.Allenhemustnotbeinahurrytogetaway.”
HeretheywereinterruptedbyarequestfromMrs.ThorpetoMrs.Allen,thatshewouldmovealittletoaccommodateMrs.HughesandMissTilneywithseats,astheyhadagreedtojointheirparty.Thiswasaccordinglydone,Mr.Tilneystillcontinuingstandingbeforethem;andafterafewminutes’consideration,heaskedCatherinetodancewithhim.Thiscompliment,delightfulasitwas,producedseveremortificationtothelady;andingivingherdenial,sheexpressedhersorrowontheoccasionsoverymuchasifshereallyfeltitthathadThorpe,whojoinedherjustafterwards,beenhalfaminuteearlier,hemighthavethoughthersufferingsrathertooacute.
