           Thestrengthofthesefeelings,however,wasfarfromassistingherpen;andneverhaditbeenharderforhertowritethaninaddressingEleanorTilney.Tocomposealetterwhichmightatoncedojusticetohersentimentsandhersituation,conveygratitudewithoutservileregret,beguardedwithoutcoldness,andhonestwithoutresentment—aletterwhichEleanormightnotbepainedbytheperusalof—and,aboveall,whichshemightnotblushherself,ifHenryshouldchancetosee,wasanundertakingtofrightenawayallherpowersofperformance;and,afterlongthoughtandmuchperplexity,tobeverybriefwasallthatshecoulddetermineonwithanyconfidenceofsafety.ThemoneythereforewhichEleanorhadadvancedwasenclosedwithlittlemorethangratefulthanks,andthethousandgoodwishesofamostaffectionateheart.

           “Thishasbeenastrangeacquaintance,”observedMrs.Morland,astheletterwasfinished;“soonmadeandsoonended.Iamsorryithappensso,forMrs.Allenthoughtthemveryprettykindofyoungpeople;andyouweresadlyoutoflucktooinyourIsabella.Ah!PoorJames!Well,wemustliveandlearn;andthenextnewfriendsyoumakeIhopewillbebetterworthkeeping.”

           Catherinecolouredasshewarmlyanswered,“NofriendcanbebetterworthkeepingthanEleanor.”

           “Ifso,mydear,Idaresayyouwillmeetagainsometimeorother;donotbeuneasy.Itistentoonebutyouarethrowntogetheragaininthecourseofafewyears;andthenwhatapleasureitwillbe!”

           Mrs.Morlandwasnothappyinherattemptatconsolation.
