Catherinehadneverthoughtonthesubjecttillthatmoment,but,uponexaminingherpurse,wasconvincedthatbutforthiskindnessofherfriend,shemighthavebeenturnedfromthehousewithouteventhemeansofgettinghome;andthedistressinwhichshemusthavebeentherebyinvolvedfillingthemindsofboth,scarcelyanotherwordwassaidbyeitherduringthetimeoftheirremainingtogether.Short,however,wasthattime.Thecarriagewassoonannouncedtobeready;andCatherine,instantlyrising,alongandaffectionateembracesuppliedtheplaceoflanguageinbiddingeachotheradieu;and,astheyenteredthehall,unabletoleavethehousewithoutsomementionofonewhosenamehadnotyetbeenspokenbyeither,shepausedamoment,andwithquiveringlipsjustmadeitintelligiblethatsheleft“herkindremembranceforherabsentfriend.”Butwiththisapproachtohisnameendedallpossibilityofrestrainingherfeelings;and,hidingherfaceaswellasshecouldwithherhandkerchief,shedartedacrossthehall,jumpedintothechaise,andinamomentwasdrivenfromthedoor.
