Thebreakfast-roomwasgaywithcompany;andshewasnamedtothembythegeneralasthefriendofhisdaughter,inacomplimentarystyle,whichsowellconcealedhisresentfulire,astomakeherfeelsecureatleastoflifeforthepresent.AndEleanor,withacommandofcountenancewhichdidhonourtoherconcernforhischaracter,takinganearlyoccasionofsayingtoher,“Myfatheronlywantedmetoansweranote,”shebegantohopethatshehadeitherbeenunseenbythegeneral,orthatfromsomeconsiderationofpolicysheshouldbeallowedtosupposeherselfso.Uponthistrustshedaredstilltoremaininhispresence,afterthecompanyleftthem,andnothingoccurredtodisturbit.
Inthecourseofthismorning’sreflections,shecametoaresolutionofmakinghernextattemptontheforbiddendooralone.ItwouldbemuchbetterineveryrespectthatEleanorshouldknownothingofthematter.Toinvolveherinthedangerofaseconddetection,tocourtherintoanapartmentwhichmustwringherheart,couldnotbetheofficeofafriend.Thegeneral’sutmostangercouldnotbetoherselfwhatitmightbetoadaughter;and,besides,shethoughttheexaminationitselfwouldbemoresatisfactoryifmadewithoutanycompanion.
