Theyreturnedtothehall,thatthechiefstaircasemightbeascended,andthebeautyofitswood,andornamentsofrichcarvingmightbepointedout:havinggainedthetop,theyturnedinanoppositedirectionfromthegalleryinwhichherroomlay,andshortlyenteredoneonthesameplan,butsuperiorinlengthandbreadth.Shewashereshownsuccessivelyintothreelargebed-chambers,withtheirdressing-rooms,mostcompletelyandhandsomelyfittedup;everythingthatmoneyandtastecoulddo,togivecomfortandelegancetoapartments,hadbeenbestowedonthese;and,beingfurnishedwithinthelastfiveyears,theywereperfectinallthatwouldbegenerallypleasing,andwantinginallthatcouldgivepleasuretoCatherine.Astheyweresurveyingthelast,thegeneral,afterslightlynamingafewofthedistinguishedcharactersbywhomtheyhadattimesbeenhonoured,turnedwithasmilingcountenancetoCatherine,andventuredtohopethathenceforwardsomeoftheirearliesttenantsmightbe“ourfriendsfromFullerton.”Shefelttheunexpectedcompliment,anddeeplyregrettedtheimpossibilityofthinkingwellofamansokindlydisposedtowardsherself,andsofullofcivilitytoallherfamily.
